When you are looking for high-quality pre-K in the Trumbull and Bridgeport areas, schedule a tour of Strong Start Day Care to learn about our great learning center. We take children, from infants to pre-K.
Our pre-K, as all our classes, uses an inquiry-based curriculum. This is a system of teaching that utilizes a child’s natural tendency toward curiosity. A great example of this is turning questions around on children. Here are five common questions used in inquiry-based lessons.
- What do you think?
- How do you know this?
- Why do you think that?
- Can you tell me more? Do you still have questions?
These questions tap into a child’s mind to see what knowledge they’ve gathered on the subject already. Often they know some of the answers but are unsure of themselves. Getting them to explore the answers themselves, before you provide more information, lets you know at what level their current understanding is. There are some topics where adults confuse kids by giving them too much information when the child only wanted to further their understanding a bit. Letting them lead the learning lets them grow at their own pace.
Problems solving is also a key component of the inquiry-based curriculum. If it is a personal problem the child is facing, say a conflict with a fellow student or a misunderstanding with a teacher, one simple question can help them learn to deal with it on their own. Ask the child, What can you do to make it better? This one simple question puts the power in their hands and so discourages victimization and also lets them know that their actions can change the situation.
